Our Background and Our Beliefs.
The Pixies Den was established here in Cumbria in 2006. It is
built on the foundation of my own Nursing, Midwifery and Teaching background.
We hold dear a philosophy that the precious early years of childhood are the
time in which a child needs to develop a strong imagination and inner self confidence that will equip them for the academic years. We aim to support our children in learning how to make independent choices and developing self esteem.
Our “curriculum” is based upon traditional stories, nursery
rhymes and the natural world. We work hard to reduce the contact with
technology and focus on the natural play materials such as wood, water and mud.
Whilst our play area is not totally free of plastic materials we choose them
carefully to enhance our natural play. We enjoy time spent outdoors in all
weathers and embrace the beautiful space in which we live.
We love to incorporate our 'pixies' ideas, choices and will take our inspiration for planning from their likes and interests. We offer book bags and toy loans so that our families can also enjoy the stories and topics at home.
Our Daily Rhythm.
Our daily rhythm is inspired by the Waldorf Steiner model that I
first came across whilst training Nursery nurses and NNEB students in the 90’s.
Whilst we are not formally trained as Waldorf teachers, we are well read and
incorporate that into our days.
We believe that children should not be driven by a clock. We prefer our days to have a natural flow and our 'pixies' learn very quickly what activity or event follows what. We do have events that require us to watch the clock, such as school collects or drops but we work hard to ensure our children do not feel rushed or hurried.
Working with Families.
We work closely with our families to ensure that the relationship between us is honest and fair and the children see us become good friends. We are proud to say that we still count our grown up 'pixies' and their families as good friends. It is important to us that your child feels comfortable, relaxed and cared for when they are with us.

Membership of the Forest Childcare Association
Our membership of the Forest Childcare Association means we have pledged to ensure the children in our care will be outside and playing at least three times a week. Our good fortune in having the wood attached to our house means that we are outside playing or visiting exciting places more than that each and every week.
OfStEd Judged our provision to be OUTSTANDING on our last inspection. If you would like to read our report we would be happy to forward details if you would like to contact us. Please see the link at the bnottom of the Title page to read reports.
